Honda’s History With SUVs
Honda has a long history spanning several decades, distinguished by creativity, dependability, and a dedication to creating premium automobiles. When Soichiro Honda launched the company in 1948, its initial concentration was on motorcycles. However, that concentration quickly moved into the automotive sector, launching the T360 mini-truck, the company's first production automobile, in 1963.
As demand for SUVs increased worldwide in the 1990s, Honda's entry into the SUV industry gained traction. The Honda CR-V, which debuted in 1997, was a key vehicle that helped the company succeed in the SUV market. Designed for practicality, fuel efficiency, and a smooth ride, the CR-V prompted Honda to continue developing its SUV lineup, introducing the Honda Pilot in 2003 with families in mind. The Pilot features a roomy cabin with three rows of seats, cutting-edge technologies, fuel efficiency, and more.
Over the years, Honda's SUV lineup has continued to grow and evolve with new models, trims, and features. The 2024 Honda SUV lineup not only includes the CR-V and the Pilot, but it also offers the smaller HR-V and the midsize Passport, as well as a hybrid version of the CR-V. Each of the SUVs in the 2024 Honda lineup offers something for the everyday driver. When you visit our showroom, we’ll take the time to answer your questions and ask a few of our own to help you streamline the shopping process. Our goal is to make your journey to a new SUV stress and hassle-free.
2024 Honda HR-V
The Honda HR-V initially debuted in 1998 for the Japanese market but didn't arrive in America until 2016. It’s now in its third generation, which was introduced in 2023. As mentioned, the HR-V is the smallest SUV in the Honda lineup, but don’t underestimate its versatility. The HR-V is the perfect option for commuters, new drivers, young adults headed to college, or anyone who wants a smooth ride and an elevated driving position.
You can find the 2024 HR-V in three trims, all with a 2.0L engine and available Real Time AWD. The 2024 HR-V offers an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 28 MPG combined in two-wheel drive and 27 MPG combined when all-wheel drive is selected.[a] You’ll also find room for five passengers, available heated seats for the middle and top trims, a seamless connection to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a long list of safety features.
2024 Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is the longest-running SUV in the Honda lineup. Like the HR-V, it is a great option for the everyday driver, offering flexibility and functionality throughout. The 2024 CR-V is available in six trims, with three of those being hybrids. In all options, you’ll find the convenience of an available Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System. This is a great option for snowy Cheshire days, giving you added stability and confidence during your drive.
Additionally, the CR-V provides you with a seating capacity of five, a seamless connection to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and many of the same great safety features you’ll find in the HR-V. A perk of the CR-V, available in the EX-L and Sport-L trims, is the Power Tailgate with Programmable Height function, making unloading and loading cargo easier. This feature is upgraded with Hands-Free Access when choosing the Sport Touring trim.
For safety, you’ll also enjoy the available Cross Traffic Monitor and Blind Spot Information System, which are must-haves when navigating busy roads. These systems are standard on all but the base LX trim and are in addition to Honda’s already comprehensive safety options. Last but not least, fuel efficiency for the gas-powered CR-V is an EPA-estimated 30 MPG combined, while you can expect an EPA-estimated 40 MPG combined when opting for a hybrid version.[b]
2024 Honda Passport
The 2024 Honda Passport is part of the model's third generation. It is a strong contender to consider when you need more room for family or cargo. For instance, if you regularly spend time in the carpool lane at one of the Hoosac Valley Regional schools, having extra space for your kids and their friends is key. Its family-friendly nature is especially apparent when you explore the finer features of the 2024 Passport, such as the standard rear-seat heater ducts, tri-zone automatic climate control system, multiple USB charging ports, and the ability to access your favorite playlist with the touch of a button.
You can choose from three Passport trims, each of which gives you added control with Intelligent Traction Management and a variety of safety features. If you and the family enjoy the great outdoors, look for the available TrailSport trim. Additionally, you’ll love the towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs. That capacity is enough to haul a trailer and ATVs to the October Mountain State Forest for the day.
2024 Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot is the largest SUV in the lineup. It provides you with your choice of six trim levels, including a TrailSport level that offers exclusive 18-inch TrailSport wheels, an off-road-tuned suspension, and a TrailWatch Camera System. Each 2024 Pilot trim offers a seating capacity of up to eight, except for the TrailSport, which has seating for seven.
Additionally, each Pilot is equipped with various drive modes to help you navigate different conditions, whether a snowstorm hits while you’re out or you want better fuel efficiency during a road trip. You’ll also find the same 5,000 lb towing capacity as the Passport when choosing an AWD model. Still, the 3,500 lb towing capacity for the two-wheel-drive Pilot is nothing to sneeze at. Our team can explore these capacities with you to ensure you find the right Honda SUV for your needs.
The Honda Pilot is equipped with the same standard safety features as the other SUVs in the lineup, all falling under the Honda Sensing umbrella. In addition, you’ll find Front and Rear Parking Sensors available for some trim levels, as well as a Cross Traffic Monitor, a Blind Spot Information System, and more.
What Does the Future Hold for Honda?
Recently, Honda developers have disclosed the use of virtual reality (VR) in the design of their electric vehicles, noting that the upcoming 2024 Honda Prologue electric SUV was primarily designed using both VR and mixed reality technology. The brand is also working on developing fuel cell vehicles, which differ from typical EVs by storing and transporting energy at a higher density. Currently, fuel cell technology is being developed for use in heavy-duty trucks. By focusing on this technology, which is based on hydrogen energy, Honda hopes to reduce CO2 emissions substantially in the near future.
